How Comfortable Are You?

Are we too comfortable with our Bibles?

I am not asking if you know where James is located?

Are you so familiar with your Bible that is has stopped inspiring or penetrating you?

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16,17

So does it correct you?

Expose the rebellion in your heart?

Are you training to live God's way?

Do you feel equipped?

Are you following it into good works of obedience?

Those are hard questions I just threw at you. I get it, I asked them of myself this week. I answered all of them, the good, bad and ugly.

If you can't answer these may I suggest that you let that shock you. Don't move past this. These are the purposes of God's word. It's not for Sunday's or coffee tables. It's for every day. We can even be reading it but not letting it in.

James tells us that we are to " be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves" (1:22)

The idea of lying to myself is crushing. I don't want to be deceiving myself and thinking I am following God when I actually just like the idea of following God.

I know how hard it is to read this. But it's been good for me to think about and ask God about this week. Good is often not easy. It's been good exercise for my heart this week.

So, as we head into this weekend, look at your Bible differently. If it's been a minute pick it up. If you read it everyday, ask for fresh eyes of discernment and a willing spirit to obey it.

Father, thank you that we live in an age where your word is available, and easily accessible. Help us choose to give it access to our hearts. Give us a zeal for your word that consumes us. In Jesus name, Amen.
