I've been thinking about this line in O Holy Night. I'm inclined to get excited about new worship songs and sometimes forget that the old ones hold such beautiful truth.
Here is the line that is tugging on my heart:
Long lay the world in sin and error pining 'til he appeared and the soul felt its worth.
I really can't think of a better description for us than pining in sin and error. Sins we choose and errors we seem to fall into with no effort, they have characterized us all at some point. For all of our sin and error, Jesus still came. His coming on the scene determined our worth....forever. If the God of the universe came for us, that's really the only thing that matters. I want to spend my life in that love and for that love.
I have long loved the name Immanuel for God because it means "God with us". He chooses to be with us. The more I believe He is with me, the more I am propelled by that belief. It is everything...the courage I need inside fear, the assurance I need inside of doubt, the shield I need inside of anxiety, the love I need inside of loneliness... my soul feels its worth.
Does your soul feel its worth?
Jesus is the only one who can fix it because He is the one who made it.
This is your invitation and reminder that Christmas is a time to remember that He came for you, that He waits for you, not just at Christmas, but every day of your life. He wants to be with you. We forget how daily God can be. Invite him to go with you today because even He likes to be invited, to be wanted. He is a relationship God. I will never understand why, but He wants us to be with Him. Take Him with you to work, take Him Christmas shopping, take Him to see the lights, take Him to make dinner, talk to Him while you wrap gifts. Let Him remind you of your souls worth to Him, and when He does, receive it.
Let this also remind you of all the souls that need His presence and how you can tangibly be His hands and feet with them. Just be with people, invite them into your life, sit with them inside theirs. Be present. Help them feel their worth, show them Jesus.
Father, help us keep this simplicity in a complicated season. You give us worth. You say we are loved. Help us believe you, and let our life, our days, our moments all flow out of this.
